Longside Community Council

Area & Members
Longside Community Council covers the communities of Rora, Torterston and Kinmundy and has worked with these communities to build up a good level of membership from long term residents and people who have moved into the area more recently.

Members of the Longside Community Council feel it is important to create good communication with local communities to ensure that local people know who to approach when they have an issue and use resources such as Village Noticeboards, Libraries, Posters and Newsletters to promote the business of the Community Council.

Community Council Initiatives
All meetings are open to the public, and this has provided an opportunity for young people from the area to link in with the Community Council on some new initiatives.  Pupils from the local primary school have conducted a local survey about what people would like to see in the village and have now presented their results to the Community Council.  The Central Buchan Team of Community, Learning & Development, Aberdeenshire Council have also worked with Longside Community Council to support local youngsters to experience how the Community Council works and to provide input on behalf of young people.  This will prove to be a valuable source of information because at this time members of the Longside Community Council are interested in possible alternative uses for the Old primary school, activities for young people and the future of local playgroup.

The Community Council is keen to work in partnership where possible and this is helping to progress a Community Garden Project in collaboration with the local Parish Church and local young people from the Scouts, Boys Brigade and Girls Brigade.  The purpose of the project is to tidy up an area of ground which is presently untidy and unused and turn it into a quiet and contemplative spot for local people, visitors to the area and for residents of a nearby sheltered housing complex.  At present the area is in the process of being cleared, in preparation of being dug over, so that the design originally put together by the local Scout group can be planned out, ready for planting in the near future.   Another environmental project is the annual ‘Garden Competition’ which involves the whole community and has been running for many years.  Community Council Members judge local gardens on criteria such as health & variety of plants, garden design and originality, with winners presented with a trophy cup on behalf of the village.

The Community Council also works very closely with the Gala Committee to help provide Hogmanay celebrations, Guy Fawkes celebrations, the Longside gala, Christmas Lights and Flower Tubs and recently provided seating along the popular ‘Railway Line’ walk which links up Longside with Mintlaw, Old Deer, Maud, Torterston and Peterhead.  The seating is now being regularly used by local cyclists, walkers, dog walkers and horse riders.
