11th March 2010
Planting work for the Portlethen Woodland Site project is getting underway with a series of tree planting events taking place throughout March involving members of the community and local schools.
The aim of the project is to provide a doorstep education and recreational resource, improve the amenity of the town and to contribute to the implementation of Aberdeenshire's Forest and Woodland Strategy.
Planting will take place throughout 80% of the open space in the woodland area, allowing for paths and open space for a natural play area to encourage access to and through the site.
Hedgerow will provide a landscape and boundary feature to define the site and add to visual interest and biodiversity value.
There are two community planting days scheduled for March - Saturday, March 13 and Saturday, March 27, from 10am to 3pm. If you would like to go along to the event please book a place by phoning 01569 768292, where you will also be able to get more information about appropriate clothing etc.
The school planting sessions will take place between Monday, March 22 and Thursday, March 25. Two classes will go out each morning - the first from 9.30am to 11am, and the second from 11am to 12.30pm.
Councillor Peter Argyle, chairman of the Infrastructure Services Committee, said: "Once completed this will prove to be an excellent resource for both the community and the schools.
"A lot of time and dedication has gone into this project, and it is wonderful to see the community all coming together to create something that will last for a very long time."
Councillor Jill Webster, vice-chair of the Infrastructure Services Committee, said: "The community identified something they would like to see done to improve where they live, and I'm very happy that they are managing to accomplish this. Well done."
A second series of tree planting sessions will run in November this year.
