Support for Village Halls

5th January 2009

Village hall committees are to get support, guidance and training as a result of a project sponsored by the Marr Local Community Planning Group.

Launch of Village Halls ManualRecent research for the Scottish Government identified that 80 per cent of village halls are owned by the communities they serve but that hall management committees find it difficult to recruit and retain volunteers.

The work of hall committees has become increasingly more complex over the years and the introduction of the Public Entertainment Licence arrangements by Aberdeenshire Council has highlighted their responsibilities.

A project was launched in 2007 to find out and respond to the needs of hall committees. Work was undertaken in partnership by representatives from the Marr Area Partnership, K&D Voice, Ballater (RD) Ltd, Aberdeenshire Council’s Community Learning & Development team and the Community Planning Officer for Marr.

The result has been a manual that will help hall committees fulfil their range of responsibilities.

Ed Bushnell, Chair of the South Marr Community Safety Group who also has responsibility for the hall in Crathie said; “This manual will be a valuable tool for any hall committee”.

The manual will be launched at a seminar for village hall committees to be held on 15th February. Training will be provided for each of the hall committees that subsequently decide to use the manual.

There are seventy eight community halls in the Marr area alone and estimated to be over three thousand in Scotland.
